I think there are genuine SI kokako sightings among the many records of people who don't really know birds too well, but see something and later re-imagine what they saw and turn it into something that fits.

For example, a grey bird in the SI bush with fleshy orangey 'wattles', a long tail, a short bill and makes a bell-like call, could be this:

Or it could be this and re-imagined to the point where someone's memory tells them it matched the description of a kokako...
