Hi all, is it ok to ask this, its not actually a sighting although I have come across many of these birds down here in the South Island over the past couple of years.
My question, admin please delete if necessary.
Does anyone have an up to date, as in right now today, where there are some Royal Spoonbills, pref with breading feathers. We dont have time to go over to Whataroa and Okarito from the East coast though. Probably neither christchurch, but East coast Dunedin way is good?
TIA
Wendy

Re: Royal Spoonbills
Hi Wendy,
eBird is probably the best spot for latest numbers and locations: https://ebird.org/map/royspo1?neg=true& ... 0&eyr=2025
Finding the best spot for photography is obviously dependent on a lot of factors but there are a lot of options for spoonbill viewing along the east coast. Places like Catlins Lake, Nugget Point, Otago Harbour, Otago Pen inlets, Wainono Lagoon (Waimate), north shore of Ellesmere, and around the fringes of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary always have a few kicking around.
Good luck,
Russ
