Govt scraps the Nature Heritage Fund

Today is the UN International Day of Biodiversity. It is also the day that the NZ government announced it has scrapped the annual $1.8 million Nature Heritage Fund. Since 1990 the DOC-administered fund has protected over 349,000 hectares of important indigenous ecosystem through legal and physical protection, including purchasing and covenanting. Much of that land would otherwise have been logged, cleared or further damaged by introduced browsing mammals:
