Brown teal, Coromandel Township

Post by Nikki McArthur »

Hi again,

On the 24/4 there were 5 brown teal present at the mouth of the Whangarahi Stream in Coromandel Township. This is a really accessible site, accessed via a wooden jetty opposite the Anchor Lodge Motel on the main road just north of the town centre. According to locals these birds are regularly seen here, with up to 14 seen at any one time.

Cheers,
Nikki

Today there were six brown teal on the Whangarahi Stream just below the bridge. When I tried to get closer to get a picture with my ancient 4MP camera (see below) they flew downstream about 100m and joined another 10 who were roosting on the stream bank, along with a royal spoonbill. Then saw that there were another two above the bridge, so that makes 18 - looks like they're doing quite well.

The Pateke were there again this weekend. We counted nine. There was also a very shy pair at Waitete in the creek near the beach

If you have the time, travel further north to just beyond Colville, there are good numbers of pateke on the muddy river bank just past the T junction, take the road left towards Port Jackson and they are under the bridge and along the banks just a hundred metres from the corner. Here's my blog from the time (a couple of years ago)- http://tikitouringnz.blogspot.co.nz/201 ... ateke.html
