Aukland

Post by chris rae »

Hi fellas,

After Tauranga we'll be stopping off in Aukland and going to Tiritiri on the 1st April.
Please can you recommend the best places to go around Aukland ?
I would have liked to have tried Great Barrier Island but I don't think that the ferry is running on Saturday 2nd April.

I'll point out some of my faves- Miranda Shorebird center is (in my opinion) a must if you are in Auckland and like waders... here is a topic on some of the sightings http://www.birdingnz.net/forum/viewtopi ... 77&p=21759 There are also a few Banded Rails hanging out by the car park (you can get very nice views).

Another nice place (for waders and ducks) is Mangere sewage ponds (Manukau Harbour), there are mudflats and shell banks for waders and a canal running alongside the road for the ducks (incl. Brown Teal often). A quick report (from a while ago) here http://www.birdingnz.net/forum/viewtopi ... 338&p=5884

I enjoy going to the Muriwai Gannet colony whenever I'm up around there, and there are some Brown Booby sticking around there for about a year now, http://www.birdingnz.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5276

Cheers
