Marsh Crake at St. Ann's Lagoon

Post by AlanShaw »

Had excellent views of a Marsh Crake out on the mud at St. Ann's Lagoon, near Cheviot, from about 11am to 1:30pm and it was still there when I left. It was in the SE corner of the main lagoon. Also 10 Black-fronted Dotterel, 5 Black Shag, 22 Aus Shoveller, lots of Pied Stilts and hundreds of Paradise Shelducks.

Yeah great little video - only time I've seen them is when they've been skulking in the rushes and lucky to get glimpses for a few seconds.

Cheers

How far away were you/What zoom lens did you use? I can't imaging getting near these things.

I was probably about 40 metres away, behind some vegetation, using a Nikon Coolpix P900 at full optical zoom plus 2X digital zoom, mounted on a sturdy tripod. The zoom lens is equivalent to 24-2000mm on a 35mm full-frame camera!
